-fold: to honor the house’s legacy while also bringing a fresh perspective to the brand
Balmain Announces New Creative Director: Antonin Tron
Just one week after Olivier Rousteing’s departure, Balmain has already found its new creative leader. The iconic fashion house, which has been around for 80 years, has chosen high-fashion veteran and Atlein founder, Antonin Tron, to take the reins.
Tron has big shoes to fill, following in the footsteps of Rousteing’s impactful tenure. But with his impressive background and aligned philosophy, Tron’s takeover could prove to be a prolific follow-up.
The 41-year-old designer brings his own brand and an impressive resume to the house, having worked for major maisons such as Louis Vuitton, Givenchy, and Saint Laurent. He also studied at Antwerp’s Royal Academy of Fine Arts alongside notable classmates like Glenn Martens and Demna Gvasalia.
Tron’s time at Balenciaga was particularly fruitful, working under the guidance of creative directors like Nicolas Ghesquière, Alexander Wang, and his university peer Demna. In 2016, he launched his own womenswear label, Atlein, which quickly gained recognition for its masterfully sculpted garments.
Known for its body-hugging jersey-knit gowns, Atlein’s approach centers on the feminine form and its interaction with the garment. Tron’s love for surfing also plays a significant role in his designs, as he has described it as the “main driver” of his life.
In an interview with the Fédération de la Haute Couture et de la Mode, Tron explained that “Atlein” is his self-coined shorthand for the Atlantic Ocean, representing his focus on the body, its energy, and movement. This sense of freedom in his designs reflects the attitude of post-war French couture, which Balmain is known for.
Balmain CEO Matteo Sgarbossa has expressed his confidence in Tron, stating that his vision “marks a continuation of Pierre Balmain’s foundational belief that ‘dressmaking is the architecture of movement’.” Sgarbossa also praised Tron’s design methodology, which is rooted in the art of draping and the physicality of fabric.
Tron’s task as the new creative director of Balmain is two-fold: to honor the house’s legacy while also bringing a fresh perspective to the brand. With his talent and experience, Tron is sure to make a lasting impact on the iconic fashion house.
