When you think of the southern California desert, a world-class cannabis cultivation facility may not be the first thing that comes to mind. But for Green Horizons, located in Coachella, it’s the perfect spot for success in the competitive regulated cannabis market. Led by cannabis executive Carlos “Los” Arias, fashion icon Tommy Hilfiger, and developer Michael Meade, the company has set its sights on 2025 as a pivotal time for growth and evolution.

Arias, a lawyer by trade, has been a pioneer in the regulated cannabis industry in the US. He helped establish cannabis cultivation and retail infrastructure in Colorado after the state legalized in 2012. After setting his sights on California, Arias established an 18,000-square-foot indoor cultivation facility near Palm Springs in Cathedral City. It was there that he met Meade, who had a vision to turn Coachella into the “Napa Valley of the South,” but with cannabis instead of wine.

The Coachella Valley has a rich agricultural history dating back over a century, and Meade believed that cannabis could revitalize it. With the help of city leaders, he established a cannabis cultivation zone in Coachella and made necessary improvements, such as power and sewer lines. Meade also secured a low two percent tax rate for his planned operation, giving Green Horizons a significant advantage in California’s regulated market.

With the green light for development in Coachella, Meade and Arias joined forces to create a premier cannabis cultivation facility. Green Horizons’ mixed-light operation combines the reliable desert sun with modern lighting equipment, making it more efficient and sustainable than traditional indoor growing methods. Arias emphasizes the company’s commitment to the environment, stating that they are “unabashed about the power of the sun.” He also dispels the misconception that cannabis grown in mixed-light facilities is inferior, stating that their goal is to create a more environmentally friendly product.

Thanks to the sun’s natural light, Green Horizons uses less electricity than traditional indoor operations, making it a more sustainable option. The facility also utilizes evaporative cooling instead of air conditioning, which requires far less energy to protect the plants from the desert heat. These eco-friendly practices not only benefit the environment but also result in cost savings for the company.

Green Horizons’ commitment to sustainability and innovation has positioned them as a leader in the regulated cannabis market. With the support of the city of Coachella and their unique cultivation methods, the company is poised for success in the years to come.
