Cannabis has long been associated with a negative reputation when it comes to mental focus. Many people believe that using cannabis can lead to a lack of concentration and motivation, leaving users feeling spacey and unmotivated. While there is some truth to this stigma, the effects of cannabis on focus are not as straightforward as they may seem. In fact, this powerful plant can have both positive and negative effects on mental functionality.
Some cannabis users report that the plant actually helps them stay more engaged and clear-minded. Betsy Kabaker, a 24-year-old marketing consultant in the San Francisco Bay Area, says, “I find my focus with cannabis. It allows me to tap into a space where I am solely focused on the task at hand.” Kabaker, who was prescribed various ADHD medications as a child, found that cannabis had fewer negative side effects and actually improved her mood and social interactions.
However, the scientific research on cannabis and focus is complex. A study conducted by Florida International University found no association between cannabis use and motivation in adolescents. This may be because cannabis can have both positive and negative effects on focus, leading to conflicting results. Additionally, a 2011 study published in the European Journal of Neuroscience found that misfirings of the endocannabinoid system, which interacts with cannabis’s active ingredients, have been linked to ADHD in mice.
While more research is needed, cannabis may also have potential benefits for other conditions that affect focus. For example, a recent study showed that a chronic low dose of THC improved cognitive function in older mice with Alzheimer’s. Until more research is conducted, those who struggle with focus may find relief by using cannabis to activate the endocannabinoid system. Nelson Ricardo, a 30-year-old product development supervisor in San Jose, California, says that using cannabis helps him be more productive and focused in his work.
