Josephine & Billie’s is a groundbreaking dispensary in South Los Angeles, run by and for women of color. The store pays tribute to two iconic Black entertainers, Josephine Baker and Billie Holiday, who were vocal advocates for cannabis in the early 20th century. Despite facing backlash for their cannabis use, Baker and Holiday used their talents to challenge societal norms and pave the way for future rule-breaking women.
Whitney Beatty and Ebony Andersen joined forces to open Josephine & Billie’s in 2021. The dispensary is designed as a throwback to the Black version of a speakeasy, known as a “teapad,” where people would gather to smoke, drink, and socialize in the 1920s and 1930s. The dispensary offers a wide range of products, from tinctures and lotions to sex oils and flower, and prioritizes education, inclusivity, and community-building. Beatty and Andersen also have a strong focus on social justice and reform, creating a safe space for women of color to learn about and embrace cannabis without stigma.
Beatty, a former assistant who worked her way up to a senior executive in the entertainment industry, is no stranger to breaking boundaries. She hopes to share her experiences and lessons learned with other women of color, paving the way for future generations. Andersen, who had a successful career as a land use specialist before transitioning to the cannabis industry, also faced discrimination as a woman in the workplace. She encourages other women to be unapologetic and assertive, just like Josephine Baker and Billie Holiday were in their time.
Josephine & Billie’s is not just a dispensary, but a symbol of empowerment and progress for women of color in the cannabis industry. Beatty and Andersen are determined to make a positive impact and create a more inclusive and equitable space for all.
