Palomo’s “Eighteen” Collection: A Return to Spain and a New Chapter in Madrid

Fashion designer Alejandro Gómez Palomo has made a triumphant return to his motherland with his latest collection, aptly titled “Eighteen.” The collection, which debuted at New York Fashion Week, marks a significant transition for Palomo’s label, as it moves from its roots in the village of Posadas to the bustling capital city of Madrid.

Inspired by the themes of adolescence and coming-of-age films, Palomo’s “Eighteen” collection seamlessly blends youthful innocence with rebellious independence. According to the brand, the collection is a reflection of the designer and his team’s own journey, as they leave behind their hometown and begin to forge their own path.

To honor this milestone, Palomo explores the markers of adolescence through fashion, incorporating muted pastels, whimsical embroidery, and oversized bows. The collection opens with all-white looks, reminiscent of baptismal garments, before transitioning into more extravagant pieces inspired by Sofia Coppola’s iconic films, such as “Marie Antoinette” and “The Virgin Suicides.” Think white slip dresses, extravagant gowns, and Rococo embellishments.

However, this celebration of innocence is not without tension. Leather motor jacket-inspired pieces add a touch of grit and independence to the collection, while bold chevron stripes pay homage to Barbie’s iconic swimsuit from the 1950s, symbolizing a rite of passage for girlhood.

The collection also features power suits, with a black men’s suit featuring Victorian shoulders and a chevron pussy bow collar, and a women’s look pairing an oversized blazer with a bare chest, knee-length skirt, and chevron tights.

But the whimsy returns in the final looks, with Swarovski flower embellishments adorning bandeau tops, shirting, trousers, and the show-stopping final gown. Palomo Spain may have saved the flowers for last, but the 33-year-old designer’s milestone show proves that he is no late bloomer.
