Head of State’s “IF HEAVEN COULD TALK” Collection Celebrates African Diaspora and Repatriation of Artifacts
The Head of State, a NYC label led by Nigerian-American designer Taofeek Abijako, debuted their latest collection on September 14. Titled “IF HEAVEN COULD TALK,” the line pays homage to Abijako’s Nigerian heritage through contemporary tailoring, vibrant colors, and innovative forms. The collection is a celebration of the African diaspora and references the movement for repatriation of African artifacts.
A Touching Ode to the African Diaspora
In the days leading up to the collection’s debut, Abijako shared a spoken word poem on Instagram that acknowledged the “artifacts stolen” and “imaginations interrupted.” This powerful message echoes the call for repatriation and highlights the importance of returning African artifacts to their rightful homelands. The collection also references Yoruba deities like Sàngó and Òsun, not as distant forces of antiquity, but as influential figures in the future.
Contemporary Tailoring Meets Nigerian Heritage
The collection seamlessly blends Western tailoring and streetwear with the draped, wrapped, and loose-fitting garments of Abijako’s Nigerian heritage. While traditional tailoring often features navy, black, and gray, “IF HEAVEN COULD TALK” opts for bold and saturated colors like turquoise, periwinkle, lavender, and primary red. These vibrant hues pay homage to the exuberant colors of Yoruba dress.
Standout Looks
The collection features a range of impressive looks, including an oversized short-sleeve shirt and a long-sleeve check shirt in electric mint, and a long gown with an asymmetrical ruched waist and a cocktail dress with a fan-like bodice in lustrous red fabric. A standout look is a brown suit that combines military-inspired button closures and an oversized collar with a curved placket revealing a draped blue sash. This hybrid blazer appears in various shades and is paired with baggy yet short shorts for a unisex look. Other blazers in the collection boast a shawl-like collar and wide necklines, showcasing the diversity of shapes and “archetypes of tomorrow.”
