Tanamachi: The Queer Mexican Brand Taking CDMX by Storm
Tanamachi: Where Fashion Meets Storytelling
In the bustling streets of Ciudad de México, there’s a brand that’s making waves with its unique blend of vices and virtues. Tanamachi is not just a fashion brand, it’s a way of life. Inspired by the everyday experiences of the city, Tanamachi creates gender-neutral pieces from deadstock materials that tell a story – their story.
Tanamachi: For the Cool Kids of CDMX
Who shops at Tanamachi? The answer is simple – the cool kids of CDMX. Those who understand the brand’s message and vibe. Tanamachi is not just a clothing brand, it’s a statement. And the ones who get it, get it.
Tanamachi: Love and Possibility
At the core of Tanamachi is the belief that fashion is more than just clothing – it’s a form of communication and empowerment. Founded by two lovers, Toshiharu and Mauricio, Tanamachi’s main message is love and possibility. They believe that Mexico has its own unique design language and that it’s possible to be a successful creative business in their home country.
Tanamachi: From Custom-Made Suits to Ready-to-Wear Pieces
Tanamachi was officially launched in 2018 with their first garment bearing the label. Initially, they only offered custom-made suits, but when the pandemic hit, everything changed. Mauricio’s business mind shifted the brand’s direction towards ready-to-wear pieces, making Tanamachi accessible to a wider audience.
Tanamachi: Wearable Everywhere
Where can you wear Tanamachi? The answer is everywhere. That’s the beauty of their pieces – they’re actually wearable. Whether you’re hitting the gym, attending a meeting, going out for dinner, or just hanging out with friends, Tanamachi’s pieces will make you feel comfortable and confident.
Tanamachi: Telling Our Side of the Story Through Clothes
Why was Tanamachi started? Simply put, because no one was telling their side of the story through clothes. Tanamachi is a representation of their culture, their experiences, and their identity. And for Toshiharu, fashion has always been a passion – he couldn’t see himself doing anything else.
Tanamachi: A Mixed Heritage and a Complicated Aesthetic
Toshiharu’s mixed heritage plays a significant role in his design aesthetic. With his great-grandparents and grandparents escaping WWII and settling in Mexico, his family’s history is a complicated one. Growing up, his family denied their heritage out of fear, but now Toshiharu and his cousins are trying to reconnect with their ancestry. Despite this, Toshiharu will always feel more Mexican than anything else.
Tanamachi: Formative Inspirations
Before launching Tanamachi, Toshiharu drew inspiration from a variety of sources. From the iconic Lady Gaga to Mexican pop culture icons like María Félix and Thalía, his creative influences are diverse and unique.
Tanamachi: Where Fashion Meets Boxing
The Box silhouette is a recurring theme in Tanamachi’s collections. But how did boxing become a central theme in the brand? Toshiharu admits he’s not a fan of sports, but he loves vintage sportswear. In his mind, boxing, lucha libre, and soccer are the epitome of Chilango sports. And with their signature Box silhouette, Tanamachi has made traditional sportswear fashionable.
