Google Invests $100 Million in Gentle Monster for 4% Stake, Taking on Meta in Smart Glasses Market

In a bold move, Google has invested $100 million in the Korean eyewear label Gentle Monster for a 4% stake. This investment reinforces Google’s commitment to its Android XR smart lens initiative and puts it in direct competition with Meta’s efforts in the smart glasses market.

According to multiple sources, Google’s investment in Gentle Monster comes just one month after announcing partnerships with the eyewear label and Warby Parker to develop design-forward smart lenses for its Android XR initiative.

This move by Google sends a strong message to Meta, which has been ramping up its AI-powered glasses rollout with partners Ray-Ban and Oakley. Meta’s recent partnership with Ray-Ban in 2023 has led to the launch of multiple models, including the highly advanced Orion glasses.

Meanwhile, Oakley and Meta have also unveiled their first product from a new long-term partnership, the HSTN, which they claim to be “a new category of Performance AI glasses.”

However, this is not Google’s first attempt at entering the smart glasses market. In 2012, the tech giant unveiled its now obsolete Google Glass device, which featured a camera, a small information display, and internet connectivity.

But with the advancements in augmented reality (AR) technologies and highly advanced AI, the market for user-friendly and convenient wearables has grown significantly. This, coupled with hardware advances that allow for slimmer and more attractive designs, has paved the way for Google’s renewed push into the smart glasses market.

Google x Gentle Monster: A Fashion-Forward Collaboration

In December, Google announced its revamped efforts with Android XR, a new operating system focused on bringing heightened experiences to headsets and glasses. And in late May, Gentle Monster took to Instagram to announce their partnership with Google, stating that it “represents a pivotal step in the evolution of smart eyewear into essential, lifestyle fashion items.”

The brand also added that “creativity and sophistication are essential design features for the integration of technology into everyday life.” With this collaboration, we can expect to see a fusion of Google’s advanced technology with Gentle Monster’s trend-driven and experimental designs.

Compared to its competitors, Gentle Monster is the youngest eyewear label and the most experimental. Founded in Seoul in 2011, the brand has gained international recognition for its collaborations with innovative designer brands like Maison Margiela and Mugler.

With this partnership, we can expect to see a pair of Gentle Monster smart glasses that not only merge technology and fashion but also pave the way for wearable concepts beyond eyewear altogether.

As of now, an official launch date for the Google x Gentle Monster collaboration has not been confirmed. But with the combination of Google’s advanced technology and Gentle Monster’s fashion-forward designs, we can expect to see a game-changing product in the smart glasses market. Stay tuned for updates!
