Veja: The French Footwear Brand That’s Changing the Game

In a market that values speed and trends above all else, Veja has made a name for itself by doing things differently. Founded in 2004 by François-Ghislain Morillion and Sébastien Kopp, this French brand has built a global following by questioning emerging trends and staying true to its principles.

Breaking Ground in Brazil

This month, Veja opened its first physical store in São Paulo, Brazil. But for this brand, Brazil is more than just a market – it’s the foundation of its entire supply chain. From sourcing organic cotton in the northeast to using wild Amazonian rubber and recycled PET from the streets of major cities, Veja’s ideals are put into action in Brazil first.

Behind the Scenes at Veja HQ

To celebrate the opening of their São Paulo store, the Veja team invited us to their headquarters in Paris. We got an inside look at their design offices, met the teams behind logistics and product development, and sat down with the founders themselves. What we saw was not a typical brand roadmap focused on consumer needs or seasonal performance, but a design ecosystem driven by values and production realities.

Innovation with Purpose

According to Sébastien, co-founder and creative lead, innovation is not about what’s new, but about what’s necessary. Every project at Veja starts with the question: can we do this the right way? While other brands rush to release new products, Veja takes a supply chain-driven approach, only releasing products that meet their strict environmental and ethical standards.

Expanding with Integrity

Veja’s retail expansion follows the same logic. It took 15 years for the brand to open its first standalone store in 2019, as they wanted to have a full assortment of products before doing so. Now, with a wider range of categories and a clear point of view, Veja plans to have ten flagship locations globally by 2025. After São Paulo, new stores are set to open in Copenhagen, Marseille, and Los Angeles.

Transparency in Design

The São Paulo store, designed by local architect Roberto Somlo, reflects Veja’s philosophy of transparency. The 600-square-meter space features exposed brick, visible beams, and a fully glazed façade that seamlessly blends the street with the interior. It also includes a cobbler station for sneaker cleaning and repair, part of Veja’s “Clean, Repair and Collect” program already active in cities like Paris, Berlin, Brooklyn, and London.

Repairing and Maintaining in Brazil

With the opening of their São Paulo store, Veja is also introducing their repair and maintenance program to the Brazilian market. This will create job opportunities and allow for testing of new styles with the local community, furthering their commitment to sustainability and ethical practices.
