Delhi-Based Brand Kartik Research Makes Its US Debut in NYC’s Lower East Side
On April 19, fashion lovers in New York City’s Lower East Side will have a new reason to celebrate – the opening of Kartik Research’s first brick-and-mortar storefront in the US. The Delhi-based brand, known for its craft-led designs inspired by Indian heritage and bohemian countercultures, will join a neighborhood of young, emerging brands and vintage designer boutiques on Orchard Street.
New York: The Biggest Market for Kartik Research
In an exclusive interview with WWD, founder Kartik Kumra shared his excitement about the brand’s expansion into the US market. “New York has been our biggest market from the start,” he said. “We opened a store in Delhi last year, but this is our first significant foray into retail. When I was in college in Philly, I would come up for the weekend; I’ve done pop-ups with Colbo down the street since I was 20 years old. We’ve been wholesaling through them and a few other retailers around the city for a few years now.”
A Fusion of Indian Heritage and Bohemian Style
Established in 2021 by Indian designer Kartik Kumra, Kartik Research has quickly gained recognition for its unique designs that blend Indian heritage with the free-spirited vibes of the 20th century. Kumra, who studied in Pennsylvania, was also a semifinalist for the prestigious LVMH Prize in 2023.
Colbo: The Perfect Venue for Kartik Research’s Pop-Ups
Before opening its own storefront, Kartik Research had successful pop-ups at multi-brand retailer Colbo. Known for its curation of brands like Cawley, SK Manor Hill, and its own in-line collection, Colbo’s aesthetic aligns perfectly with Kartik Research’s neutral colors, roomy silhouettes, and high-quality construction.
A Store with a Human Touch
Located at 61 Orchard St, the Kartik Research store exudes a warm and inviting atmosphere. The space is adorned with rustic natural materials and authentic Indian crafts, including metal vessels, sculptures, and paintings. The warm lighting and intimate seating make it the perfect place to browse and shop the brand’s handmade and naturally dyed garments.
