Vibram Showcases “Icons by Nature” at Milan Design Week 2025
Vibram, the renowned brand known for its nature-inspired designs, took center stage at Milan Design Week 2025 with an exclusive exhibition titled “Icons by Nature: When Opposites Attract.” The four-day event was held at Vibram Connection Lab, a hub for research and development, where the brand showcased its unique design philosophies.
A Dynamic Space for Innovation
The Vibram Connection Lab is not just a research and development center, but also a dynamic space for collaboration and co-creation with other creative minds. Global Catalyst at Vibram, Giuseppe Grandinetti, shared, “We’ve brought some phases of our sole production process into the space, offering a hands-on look at how our high-performance soles come to life.”
A Showcase of Contrasts
The exhibition featured a small selection of soles, silhouettes, and materials from Vibram’s archive, highlighting the contrasts that are at the core of the brand’s designs. One of the most iconic pieces on display was the Carrarmato sole, invented 88 years ago by Vitale Bramani. This durable sole, originally designed for mountain expeditions, has been repurposed for other lifestyle models, including Snoop Dogg’s Timberlands.
More Than Just Soles
While Vibram is known for its high-quality soles, the brand’s story goes beyond that. Head of Global Marketing at Vibram FiveFingers, Abby Bucknall, shared, “Everything was so artisanal back then, very much designed on instinct—very primal.” She reflected on the brand’s decades of innovation and its focus on allowing the body to move naturally and effortlessly.
The Story of Vibram FiveFingers
The exhibition also traced the development of Vibram FiveFingers, the brand’s most recent innovation. Invented at the turn of the century by Robert Fliri, the first prototype was designed to allow for close-to-nature movement by molding latex around a bare foot. The exhibition showcased the evolution of the FiveFingers silhouette and how its design mentality has remained consistent over the years.
A Hut of Protection and Reflection
One of the most eye-catching installations at the exhibition was a hut commissioned by Hank Grüner, adorned with flowers and mountain faces. Bucknall explained, “We wanted to create a hut – something linked to the idea of a mountain shelter, a place of protection and reflection.” The flowers represent the energy of FiveFingers growing from the ground, while the mountain is a nod to Vibram’s iconic soles.
A Return to Natural Movement
Vibram’s designs are not just about footwear, but also a mindset. As each toe moves independently in Vibram FiveFingers, the body becomes more connected and aware. This is a return to how movement is meant to feel – natural, effortless, and free. With a history dating back to 1937, Vibram continues to innovate and inspire with its nature-informed designs.
