Hermès Takes the Crown as Most Valuable Luxury Stock in the World
Move over LVMH, there’s a new leader in the luxury market. French brand Hermès has officially dethroned its rival, with a market cap of $276.3 billion USD, surpassing LVMH’s valuation of $274.5 billion USD.
Hermès: The New King of Luxury
According to Bloomberg, Hermès now holds the third spot on Europe’s largest listed companies, trailing behind only software giant SAP SE and weight-loss drug supplier Novo Nordisk A/S. This impressive feat comes after LVMH’s disappointing first quarter, which saw a 3% decline in sales, falling short of analysts’ projected 2% growth.
Resilience in Uncertain Times
Analysts attribute Hermès’ success to its ability to weather uncertain economic conditions. Jelena Sokolova, an analyst at Morningstar, explains, “Hermès is seen as more resilient in certain environments, which are more uncertain, and that’s exactly what is happening right now.”
The Battle for Luxury Supremacy
This is not the first time Hermès has faced off against LVMH. In 2010, LVMH CEO Bernard Arnault made a bold move by increasing his stake in the Birkin handbag maker to 17%. However, the Hermès family, who still runs the company, successfully fought back against what they saw as a hostile takeover attempt by “the wolf in cashmere.”
A Family Dynasty
While Arnault may be listed as one of the world’s richest people, with a current ranking of fifth on the Bloomberg Billionaires Index, the Hermès family is considered to be Europe’s wealthiest. Led by sixth generation heir Axel Dumas, the family has an estimated fortune of $171 billion USD as of December 2024.
Continued Success
Hermès’ impressive performance shows no signs of slowing down. In the third quarter of last year, the brand saw an 11.3% increase in sales, and overall, a 13% increase in 2024. With its resilience and strong market presence, it’s no surprise that Hermès has claimed the top spot in the luxury industry.
