Jil Sander’s Fall/Winter 2025 Show Marks the End of an Era for the Luxury Label
On Wednesday in Milan, the fashion world was rocked by the news that Jil Sander’s Fall/Winter 2025 show would be the last for creative directors Lucie and Luke Meier. The husband-wife duo, who have led the German luxury label for eight years, made the decision to part ways with the brand, leaving behind a legacy of minimalism and modernity.
The End of a Creative Partnership
Unknown to those in attendance at the show, the runway marked the swan song for the Meiers at Jil Sander. Just hours after the conclusion of the catwalk, the brand released a short press release announcing the end of the couple’s tenure as joint creative directors. The release stated, “Jil Sander and its Creative Directors Lucie and Luke Meier have mutually decided that this collection would be the last of their collaboration.” The label did not name a successor for the duo.
A Heartfelt Thank You
Renzo Rosso, chairman of OTB Group (which has owned Jil Sander since April 2021), expressed his gratitude to the Meiers for their “vision, passion for excellence, and dedication to the brand.” He thanked them for successfully leading the label and praised their ability to champion founder Jil Sander’s signature minimalism in a modern way.
A Bright Metaphor of Love
The Meiers’ final runway show was a fitting tribute to their time at Jil Sander. In their own words, it was “a bright metaphor of love.” The dark staging, with pitch-black curtains and a moody soundtrack by Benji B, allowed the designers’ creations to shine. Luxurious materials like shearling fur, alpaca knitwear, and velvet, taffeta, silk, and sequins were expertly crafted into gender-fluid silhouettes, showcasing the Meiers’ mastery of texture.
A Distinct Design Identity
As Jil Sander’s longest-standing creative directors, the Meiers were able to successfully build a distinct design identity for the brand while also paying homage to its history. This is no easy feat in the ever-changing fashion industry, where designers often play a game of musical chairs. While their final collection may have strayed from the brand’s strict minimalism, it still stayed true to the refined archive that the Meiers have helped shape.
What’s Next for the Meiers?
Rumors are swirling that the Meiers could be headed to LOEWE, where current creative director Jonathan Anderson is expected to depart soon. However, nothing has been confirmed. Adding fuel to the fashion rumor mill, it’s also been said that former Proenza Schouler designers Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez are in talks to take over at LOEWE. Only time will tell where the Meiers’ creative talents will take them next.
