Vans and Designer Nicole McLaughlin Team Up for Second Upcycled Collaboration

Get ready for a new and innovative collaboration between Vans and designer Nicole McLaughlin. The two have reunited for a second time, taking McLaughlin’s upcycling expertise to new heights. This time, they’re adding tactical components and accessories to the classic Slip-On RS silhouette, resulting in a functional yet unconventional design.

The design is inspired by traditional trekking backpacks, featuring a roomy cargo pouch over the toe box and adjustable nylon straps. To showcase the intricate details of the design, the campaign features miniature versions of McLaughlin’s studio and hiking gear.

In an official statement, McLaughlin shared her inspiration for the collection, saying, “Creating pieces that are multi-purpose and fun has always been my goal. I was inspired by vintage hiking packs from the ’70s and the aesthetic of outdoor gear from that era.”

The Slip-On RS stays true to its hiking-inspired roots with uppers made of 40% recycled canvas treated with water-resistant PFC-free DWR and a lugged tread pattern on the outsoles for multi-surface traction. The collection offers a natural canvas colorway and a charcoal colorway with black trims and details. Both models feature vintage co-branded details, including a Vans N.M. Rucksack patch and wordmarks on the insoles.

But the collaboration doesn’t stop at shoes. The collection also includes ankle socks with patch pockets and a utilitarian Rucksack that doubles as a climbing chalk bag. McLaughlin’s resourceful approach to repurposing garments and whimsical design details shines through in this collection.

This isn’t McLaughlin’s first collaboration with Vans. In 2023, she released a pared-back Slip-On VP VR3 LX, and has since collaborated with other brands like Merrell, HOKA, and PUMA. She’s also known for her DIY one-offs, such as a jacket made from PUMA goalkeeper gloves and a stool made from discarded JanSport packs.

The latest Vans x Nicole McLaughlin collection will be available on McLaughlin’s web store on Wednesday, February 26, and on the Vans web store and select locations on February 27. Don’t miss out on this unique and functional collaboration.
