Saks Fifth Avenue Faces Financial Troubles, Owes Brands Hundreds of Thousands of Dollars
After months of uncertainty, luxury retailer Saks Fifth Avenue is once again making headlines for all the wrong reasons. Recent reports have revealed that the company owes a significant amount of money to its brands, with some invoices reaching hundreds of thousands of dollars.
In a memo sent by Saks Global CEO Marc Metrick, it was announced that payments to vendors would be delayed and processed in 12 installments starting in July. This news comes as a disappointment to many brands who have been waiting for their overdue bills to be paid.
Despite the financial struggles, Metrick reassured vendors that any new orders would still be fulfilled within 90 days of receipt, although this falls short of the industry standard of 60 days.
The news of Saks Fifth Avenue’s financial troubles comes at a time when the company is in the midst of a $2.7 billion acquisition of fellow luxury retailer Neiman Marcus. This acquisition was completed late last year, but it seems that Saks is still feeling the effects of the merger.
In addition to the financial woes, Saks Fifth Avenue also announced the closure of Neiman Marcus’s iconic flagship location in Dallas, Texas earlier this week. However, the company has stated that this closure is not related to the merger and that employees of the location have been offered transfer opportunities within the company.
Despite reassurances from upper management, the current financial struggles at Saks Fifth Avenue are reminiscent of the downfall of another iconic New York-based retailer, Barneys. After nearly a century in business, Barneys was forced to close its doors in 2020 due to financial difficulties.
So far, there have been no major layoffs at Neiman Marcus, but it is likely that a few Saks and Neiman Marcus locations will be closing in the near future. As the luxury retail industry continues to face challenges, it remains to be seen how Saks Fifth Avenue will navigate these financial troubles and maintain its position as a top luxury retailer.
