“J.L-A.L’s FW25 Collection: A Fashion Week Tribute to René Laloux’s La Planète Sauvage”
Long before James Cameron’s blockbuster Avatar, there was another sci-fi film that captured the imagination of audiences with its otherworldly creatures and unique fashion. René Laloux’s animated masterpiece, La Planète Sauvage, released in 1973, featured blue-skinned humanoid aliens known as Draags who ruled over humans captured from planet Earth. And it’s this iconic film that has inspired J.L-A.L’s latest collection, presented at Paris Fashion Week.
The FW25 collection is a nod to the film’s distinctive style, featuring new outerwear collaborations with Goldwin and sneakers from HOKA, as well as details crafted by artist Victoria Ohanyan. While the references to the movie may not be immediately obvious, upon closer inspection, one can see the subtle nods to the Draags’ unique fashion sense. From bulbous headbands to intricate intarsia patterns, the collection pays homage to the ruling aliens’ garb.
But the collection is not just a futuristic interpretation of the film’s fashion. J.L-A.L cleverly incorporates elements of the film’s traditional illustration style, with laser-cut shearling, brushed wools, and soft fabrics balancing out technical silhouettes like puffer jackets and tactical pants. The use of gradient wool fabric, developed by Manteco, adds a touch of the film’s hand-drawn shading to pieces like a black-to-gray overcoat with a discreet placket closure.
The Draags’ patterned clothing also serves as inspiration for the collection’s duo-tone knitwear, featuring a brown sweater with maroon intarsia on the chest, shoulders, and forearms. The color palette of gray, brown, and black further enhances the extraterrestrial vibe of the line, while J.L-A.L’s architectural garment construction and textured materiality add to the overall futuristic aesthetic.
But the collection doesn’t stop at clothing. J.L-A.L has also collaborated with Goldwin using AI-driven design methods to create new pieces, and has introduced two sleek colorways of HOKA’s Mafate X. And with Victoria Ohanyan’s wooden additions, the collection seamlessly blends organic elements with J.L-A.L’s tech-forward aesthetic.
