Stella McCartney Buys Back Minority Stake from LVMH in Latest Business Move
In a bold and strategic move, fashion designer Stella McCartney has officially announced her plans to buy back the minority stake from luxury conglomerate LVMH. This decision marks a new chapter for the brand, as McCartney takes on the role of global ambassador for sustainability within the group.
According to a statement from LVMH, the divestiture comes after “more than five years of fruitful collaboration” between the two parties. McCartney’s desire to write a new page in her story independently is reflected in this move, as she worked closely with LVMH to strengthen the fundamentals and governance of her house.
Despite the divestment, McCartney will continue to work closely with the group, advising the Arnaults on sustainability matters in her new role as global ambassador. This partnership has been a successful one, with LVMH CEO Bernard Arnault reportedly “extremely happy” with the collaboration, citing McCartney’s commitment to sustainability as a decisive factor in the initial partnership.
Under LVMH, McCartney has spearheaded several sustainability initiatives, including a recent partnership with Veuve Clicquot. The collaboration turned manually collected grape stems from the Champagne harvest into luxury accessories, with models carrying a bag made from the upcycled grape waste on the runway at her Spring 2024 show.
LVMH reports that this new grape material was created in less than 18 months, significantly reducing their greenhouse gas emissions compared to traditional leather and winemaking processes. This is just one example of McCartney’s dedication to sustainable practices, and with her new role as global ambassador, she will continue to drive positive change within the fashion industry.
