Y-3’s FW25 Runway Show: A Fusion of Technical Tailoring and Bold Performance Gear
Under the pulsating lights of a strobing LED screen, Y-3’s FW25 runway show at Paris’ Pavillon Cambon Capucines was a sight to behold. The collaboration between Yohji Yamamoto and adidas, born in 2003, stayed true to its roots with a collection that showcased technical-infused tailoring and elegant performance gear, all with a touch of restraint.
The show opened with a series of all-black looks, featuring subtle tactical details on clean and simple silhouettes. From a voluminous shell jacket with oversized patch pockets to a glossy collared jacket and a sleeveless trench, the pieces exuded a sense of understated sophistication.
But as the show progressed, a fiery print reminiscent of flames was introduced, adding a burst of energy to the black and white fabrics. The oversized pattern adorned everything from long coats and trousers with knee pads to puffer jackets and knitted sweaters.
Midway through the presentation, a collaboration with Shinsuke Takizawa’s Neighborhood was unveiled, showcasing a range of motorsport-inspired looks. Complete with co-branded racing helmets and leather motorcycle jackets, the collection also included full racing jumpsuits, one of which was modeled by Gabriette in a vibrant red hue. The combination of bold pieces like graphic leather racing trousers with more subdued items, such as a long black overcoat, struck a perfect balance between edgy and elegant.
The show then took a turn towards a lava-like red-orange hue, adding a touch of drama to the mix. This was best demonstrated by a sleek chore jacket and cargo pant set, paired with a tonal-printed vest. While the red-orange color was only used sparingly, a smoky tie-dye-esque print appeared on several pieces, including a long padded coat, windbreaker shell jackets, and parachute pants.
The finale of the runway lineup showcased a familiar but timeless theme that Yamamoto and adidas have continuously reinvented. This section played with different applications of adidas’s iconic three-stripes, resulting in unexpected and eye-catching stylizations. Stand-out looks included a black suit jacket and trousers with the three stripes in varying directions, and an asymmetrically draped skirt featuring the stripes in a horizontal orientation.
Overall, Y-3’s FW25 collection was a fusion of technical tailoring and bold performance gear, with a touch of restraint and a dash of drama. Check out the full collection in the gallery above and stay tuned to Hypebeast for the latest coverage of FW25 Fashion Weeks.
