Showcasing Grace Wales Bonner’s FW25 Collection: A Delicate and Soulful Nostalgia
In a stark white studio, British designer Grace Wales Bonner has unveiled her latest collection for FW25. With a delicate and romantic touch, the collection showcases meticulous tailoring and intricate embellishments, while paying homage to 20th-century Black style with the help of Chicago-based artist Theaster Gates.
The Black Image Corporation: A Tribute to Black Women’s Influence on Global Culture
The first thing that catches the eye in the collection are the monochromatic portraits, courtesy of Gates’ conceptual project, The Black Image Corporation. Featuring images from the Johnson Publishing Company, the collection celebrates the impact of Black women on global culture.
From iconic publications like Ebony and Jet, photographs by Moneta Sleet Jr. and Isaac Sutton are given new life through overdyed prints and denim jacquard. A striking cobalt blue shirt serves as the canvas for a repeating glamour shot, perhaps a nod to Warhol’s famous Marilyn Monroe prints. Another standout piece is a denim jacket and shorts set featuring a model running her hands through her hair. And in a bold move, a beige workwear trousers and bright yellow and brown puffer vest combo features the same glamour shot enlarged on a white tee.
Outerwear That Demands Attention
The outerwear in this collection is particularly noteworthy, with a special collaboration with English menswear manufacturer Crombie Ltd. The brand worked with Bonner to create a traditional grate coat in navy wool with brown leather piping and golden buttons. Other standout pieces include a beige Japanese canvas work coat with prominent gold lock closures, and an Italian leather flight jacket with curly long-haired fur accents on the collar and cuffs.
Delicate Details and Vintage Vibes
The collection also features jewel-toned knitwear and a lace-like woven fabric on a white top and matching shorts. The color palette is dominated by soft pinks, which can also be seen on a vintage “Infinite Soul” athletic t-shirt and as an accent on a new colorway of the adidas Originals x Wales Bonner Jewel Mary Jane “Gold.”
