UNDERCOVER’s FW25 Collection: A Journey Through Futuristic Nostalgia
Jun Takahashi, the mastermind behind UNDERCOVER, takes us on a journey with his latest collection titled “Interface.” As we flip through the lookbook, we are transported from austere black tailoring to a vibrant world of neon-lit references to 1970’s Krautrock and whimsical monsters. This collection, marking the 35th anniversary of the brand, is a reflection of Takahashi’s punk roots while also showcasing his contemporary codes.
The lookbook opens with models adorned with glowing fluorescent halos, setting the tone for the futuristic and nostalgic vibe of the collection. The first few looks feature a black-on-black patchwork thread, adding a unique twist to traditional menswear pieces such as a two-piece suit, a double-breasted coat, a parka, and a button-up shirt. The visible taped stitching from various angles creates a clean and re-worked effect, showcasing Takahashi’s attention to detail.
But the real showstopper comes when Takahashi brings out the smoke machines and neon lasers, transforming the dark studio into a technicolor wonderland. The collection now incorporates imagery from Krautrock bands, with pieces like a white Faust sweater and a sleeveless Moebius hoodie. One standout piece is a puffer jacket featuring a full-bleed print of a cyborg Sci-Fi illustration, adding a touch of edginess to the graphic-focused portion of the collection.
As the journey continues, models are styled in leggings layered with brushed knit shorts, and later on, plaid skirts – a nod to Takahashi’s early punk references. Plaid fabrics make their way into tweed suit jackets and slim trousers, before giving way to new patterns featuring monster illustrations by the late Spanish artist Josep Baqué.
But it’s not just about the clothes – the accessories in this collection are just as eye-catching. Various garden gloves, bowler hats, and caps printed with delicate florals and adorned with opulent jewels add a balanced contrast to the masculine-leaning looks.
As we reach the end of the collection, we see a shift from the pared-back monochrome palette to bold and vibrant colors like turquoise, electric blue, yellow, and red. These colors, along with the eclectic mix of patterns and textures, bring the journey to a stunning conclusion.
