Nike Celebrates HBCU Legacy with New Air Force 1 Designs

Nike is back at it again, honoring the rich history and culture of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) with their latest Yardrunners initiative. This time, they’ve teamed up with two influential HBCU alumni, Kahlana Barfield Brown and Dex Robinson, to create two unique designs for the iconic Air Force 1.

Yardrunners 5.0: A Tribute to HBCU Heritage

Launched in 2020, the Yardrunners program aims to support HBCU communities through impactful storytelling, recruitment efforts, and purpose-driven products. And for their 5.0 release, Nike has pulled out all the stops.

Dex Robinson’s VUU-Inspired Design

Dex Robinson’s design draws inspiration from his alma mater, Virginia Union University (VUU). The standout feature of this Air Force 1 is the pony hair finish, symbolizing the strength and elegance of VUU’s Panther mascot. The maroon laces and steel outline around the Nike Swoosh pay homage to the school’s colors, while personalized heel tabs reading “Dear Union” and “With Love, Dex Rob” add a heartfelt touch. And for a truly customizable experience, the insole features interchangeable pins including the VUU logo, Panther mascot, and DIALLO feather icon.

Kahlana Barfield Brown’s “Ice Cream” Edition

Kahlana Barfield Brown’s design, aptly named the “Ice Cream” edition, weaves a narrative of unity and pride. The vintage cream leather upper represents the history of HBCUs, dating back to 1837. The brick-colored sock liner symbolizes the enduring strength and iconic architecture of their campuses. And the deep brown tongue, swoosh, and outsole pay tribute to melanin and the profound connection shared by HBCU students. To add a personal touch, Kahlana’s signature graces the heel, celebrating her place in this storied legacy.
