Chanel’s New Artistic Director: Matthieu Blazy Takes the Reigns
After six months without a Creative Director, Chanel has finally found their new leader. Fresh off his departure from Bottega Veneta, Matthieu Blazy has been chosen as the new Artistic Director for the iconic fashion house.
Blazy, who was appointed to Bottega Veneta in November of 2021, will now be in charge of all of Chanel’s fashion, couture, and accessories. He is set to debut his first collection for the brand at Paris Fashion Week in October.
In an interview with The New York Times, Bruno Pavlovsky, Chanel’s president for fashion, expressed his confidence in Blazy’s ability to bring a modern and fresh perspective to the brand. He also referred to Blazy as “a talent for tomorrow” and praised his respect for the brand’s heritage while also having a unique vision for ready-to-wear, silhouettes, and bags.
Blazy himself shared his excitement and honor in joining the “wonderful house of Chanel” and looks forward to working with the team to create a new chapter for the brand.
In a statement given to WWD, Alain Wertheimer (Chanel’s global executive chairman) and Leena Nair (Chanel’s global chief executive officer) revealed that Blazy beat out some of the industry’s most talented designers for the position. They were impressed by his track record, vision for Chanel, and modernity.
Blazy will be the fourth official Creative Director for Chanel, following in the footsteps of Virginie Viard who left the brand last June. Replacing Blazy at Bottega Veneta is Louise Trotter.
