The Grenfell Tower Fire: A Tragic Event That Sparked a Community-Driven Football Club
The Grenfell Tower fire was a devastating event that shook the nation and claimed the lives of 72 people. In the aftermath, communities came together to remember and honor those who were lost. One such community-driven initiative is Grenfell Athletic FC, a grassroots football team founded to bring young men together.
A Kit Made of Surviving Fabric
The football club, launched by Rupert Taylor, has just unveiled a new football kit in collaboration with Nike and Kitlocker. What makes this kit unique is that it features cuts of fabric donated from items of clothing that survived the Grenfell fire. This includes garments worn by survivors on the night of the fire.
Fabric of the Community
The new kits are part of a project called “Fabric of the Community,” with each shirt incorporating a bespoke cut of fabric in a subtle perimeter area surrounding the club crest. One of the donors is Nick Burton, who lost his wife in the fire. He donated the shirt he wore on the night of the fire as a way to find closure.
A Touching Tribute
The clean-cut shirt, designed with NFC technology by Kitlocker, will be worn by Grenfell Athletic’s men’s and women’s teams during the 2024/25 season. The NFC chip, embedded behind the club badge, allows fans to digitally interact with the kit and watch a video related to the donated fabric.
Support from All Over
In addition to victims of the Grenfell fire, non-local supporters of the club have also donated to the campaign. This includes footballer Hector Bellerin, who donated a match-worn shirt from his time at Arsenal, and One Direction star Louis Tomlinson, who donated one of his treasured Doncaster Rovers shirts.
