One of the most remarkable aspects of the cannabis community is its diversity, with members from all walks of life. As legalization continues to spread across the country, more and more people are discovering the benefits of this plant, including older Americans. In fact, a 2020 study published in JAMA Internal Medicine, a respected medical journal, revealed that seniors are the fastest-growing group of cannabis users. The percentage of adults aged 65 and older in the US who reported using cannabis increased by 75% between 2015 and 2018, from 2.4% to 4.2%. While some of these individuals may have previous experience with cannabis, others are trying it for the first time in hopes of improving their health. However, for many seniors, learning about cannabis can be overwhelming. To make the process easier, Revel Communities, a chain of retirement communities, has been hosting cannabis-themed social events for interested residents. With 13 locations across the Western US, Revel holds monthly events at its facilities in California, Colorado, Washington, and Nevada. According to Jack Waldie, corporate resident experience director at Revel Communities, these events began as part of a series aimed at challenging residents’ preconceived notions about health and wellness. Along with cannabis, the events also cover topics such as senior sex and physical activities like axe throwing and archery. Waldie explains that these events cater to the residents’ desire to stay active and live life to the fullest. He adds that the events are entirely optional, and residents can choose whether or not to participate. To host these events, Revel partners with licensed local vendors who provide social and educational cannabis programming. As smoking is not allowed in Revel Communities, the events focus on edible forms of cannabis. Activities can range from social gatherings where residents can relax and enjoy cannabis products while watching a movie or having snacks at the onsite pub, to field trips to dispensaries. These dispensaries often have passionate staff who are more than willing to educate residents about their products. Educational events may also feature guest speakers who discuss the science and data behind using cannabis. Overall, Revel’s cannabis events have been well-received by seniors, and they continue to be a popular addition to the community’s activities.
