Rihanna’s Family-Inspired Designs Continue to Shine with New Fenty x PUMA Avanti Colorways
When we last caught up with Rihanna in December, she made it clear that her family is a major influence on her designs. “My vision is to incorporate family into everything,” she declared, marking the relaunch of her Fenty x PUMA Creeper. Now, almost a year after bringing back the Creeper, Riri is still perfecting her partnership with PUMA, revealing two fresh colorways of the highly sought-after Fenty x PUMA Avanti. As her sons RZA and Riot get older, the soccer-loving singer – also one half of Hollywood’s coolest parents – is slowly entering her “soccer mom” phase. It’s only a matter of time before the boys hit the field and Rihanna is “no skirt, no heels, tons of snacks”-ing her way through Saturday morning games.
To celebrate the release of the football-inspired Fenty x PUMA Avanti sneakers, Rihanna held a press conference where she fielded questions from kid social media influencers. This was a fitting choice, as family is at the heart of her design process. While she may not have received any direct creative input from RZA, Riot, or even Rocky, they remain crucial in her approach to sneaker design. “I was very selfish with the colors. I wanted to make sneakers in colors that I wanted to wear and that I wanted to see my kids wear,” she explains, referring to the new “Club Red” and “Warm White” shades. “When I first saw the Avanti, I was drawn to its rich history.”
The two new colorways are a perfect blend of football and family, crafted from premium leather and accented with gold detailing. “A red sneaker is something you can throw on no matter what. It can be worn with any outfit or colorway,” Rihanna adds. “The only cream or white-ish sneaker I had made before was pony hair, so I wanted to do something more simple and affordable.” These new colorways arrive just in time for the one-year anniversary of Rihanna’s collaboration with PUMA, which saw the return of the archival Avanti silhouette last September. “When I first saw the Avanti, I was drawn to its rich history,” she reiterates, citing soccer legends Eusebio, Pelé, and Maradona as her inspiration. “PUMA has such a legacy in their archives and I wanted to highlight that. I wanted a shoe that was chunky in silhouette but still sleek. Now I’m realizing that the Avanti can be embraced in other ways. It can evolve. There are more interpretations to come.”
Rihanna even compares each sneaker’s energy to one of her albums, saying, “The red ones would definitely be the Loud album and the white ones would be Music of the Sun.” She explains that the red ones are bold and loud, while the white ones are pure, innocent, and new – just like she was back in those days.
