Wales Bonner x adidas Originals FW24 Collection: A Nostalgic Nod to Hip-Hop’s Roots
Wales Bonner has solidified her status as one of the most boundary-pushing streetwear designers of the day with her unique spin on adidas’s classic silhouettes. Drawing inspiration from British subculture, her Caribbean heritage, and the global African diaspora, the designer returns with a new collection paying homage to the birthplace of Hip-Hop.
The Setting: Historic Harlem
Shot by Rennell Medrano, the campaign for the collection takes place in the iconic NYC neighborhood of Harlem, setting the perfect backdrop for the line’s retro-tinged streetwear essentials.
The Stars of the Show: adidas Superstar and Samba Models
Leading the collection are all-new variations of the adidas Superstar and Samba models. Bonner continues to push the boundaries with her interpretation of the classic Samba, offering two patent leather colorways embossed with a crocodile texture. The warm toffee and deep indigo hues are contrasted by cream-colored basket-weave tongues and topstitching at the heel. The new Samba Millenium takes things a step further with three unique colorways featuring two-toned uppers made of smooth leather and crocodile-printed leather at the heel.
A Reimagined Superstar
But the real showstopper is the elevated version of the iconic Superstar model. Completely reimagined, it features a recurring reptilian leather finish, patent leather stripes, and a luxurious satin lining.
70s Vibes and Bold Apparel
The line of casual yet bold apparel draws inspiration from the proportions and fits popular in the 1970s, paying homage to the fashions of Hip-Hop’s forefathers. Groovy floral prints adorn shorts, tanks, and cropped polo shirts, while solid-colored tracksuits come in vibrant shades of tangerine orange and turquoise blue. Departing from the current trend of “quiet luxury,” the adidas logo is enlarged on graphic tees, jackets, and hoodies.
