Dr. Martens: The Iconic 1460 Boot is More Than Just Footwear
For the past 60 years, Dr. Martens has been a cornerstone of modern aesthetics, effortlessly blending with various wardrobes and style preferences. But the classic 1460 boot is not just any ordinary boot – it’s a boot made for experimentation and revolutionizing footwear.
Built from Dr. Martens’ signature durable, hard-wearing leather, the 1460 features a classic 8-eye structure with the brand’s distinctive yellow welt stitch. It’s a boot that can take wearers from the warehouses to festivals, to formal events, and beyond. And while it was originally designed for postmen and police officers, it has been embraced by style connoisseurs worldwide.
The 1460 boot is rooted in Dr. Martens’ workwear heritage, but the 1460 Sub Boot takes it to the next level with upgraded construction and advanced features. The “Bouncing Sole” has been extended up to the puritan stitch line for added water protection. The boot’s upper is made from a highly water-resistant Newlands leather and features a breathable fleece lining, ensuring weather protection in even the toughest conditions.
Though these features were originally designed for durability, the 1460 boot has also become a canvas for innovation and inspiration for the brand. The 14XX Sub Boot takes the iconic silhouette and elevates it with maximalist features, including a bold, distorted print.
“Our icon, the 1460 boot, is timeless,” says Dr. Martens Design Lead, Joel Wilson. “There’s a reason why the boot is still relevant over 60 years later – the design features are unique and speak to something much bigger than just a boot. It’s a statement. When the team designed the Sub Boot, our ambition was to level up and evolve a workwear silhouette specifically for wet weather environments. And looking even further ahead to the 14XX iteration of the Sub Boot, the icon is at the very center of the design, yet unseen by the world and hidden by a removable wind, sand, and waterproof gaiter featuring a print that nods to snow camouflage.”
These reinterpretations of the iconic 1460 boot will be featured in Dr. Martens’ AW24 campaign, showcasing the collection’s functionality in an ever-changing, urban environment. The Sub Boot and 14XX Sub Boot will be available online and in stores globally starting October 3.
