Musée Guimet’s Sculpture-Stuffed Halls Set the Stage for Peter Do’s Spring 2025 Runway Show in Paris
On Tuesday afternoon, the Musée Guimet in Paris was transformed into a chiseled scene for Peter Do’s highly anticipated Spring 2025 runway show. The stoic destination, known for its extensive collection of Asian art, was the perfect backdrop for Do, a Vietnamese designer, whose latest fashion thesis included a collaboration with Philip Huang’s Bangkok studio.
“Grounded” Collection Deconstructs Summer Tailoring with Luxurious Fabrics and Traditional Dying Techniques
Titled “Grounded,” Do’s collection took a unique approach to summer tailoring by incorporating featherweight wool, silk, and chiffon textiles. These fabrics were specially produced in Huang’s Thailand outpost over a period of six months before being shipped to Paris. The color story of the collection drew inspiration from nature, with shades of oxblood, stone, and midnight representing leaves, tree bark, fire, and air. Each hue was created using centuries-old dying techniques, showcasing Do’s commitment to preserving traditional practices.
Mary H.K. Choi Reflects on the Effort and Labor Behind Do’s Collection
In the show notes, writer Mary H.K. Choi ponders, “When did effort become embarrassing?” She goes on to describe the current fashion landscape as “smooth,” “glossy,” and “slippery,” with little acknowledgement of the manual labor and work that goes into creating a collection. Do’s collection, on the other hand, is a testament to the hard work and dedication that goes into each piece.
Do’s Signature Oversized Cuts and Exposed Backs Take the Stage
Do’s cult-favorite oversized cuts and exposed backs were once again on display in this collection, along with garment-dyed “Vietnam” T-shirts and a new technical satin “168” uniform, named after the total number of hours in a week. The line featured modular silhouettes in all black, marked with tattoo lines that are sure to become Do’s signature.
Airiness and Comfort are Key in Do’s Collection
Backstage, Do expressed his hope that the pieces in his collection wouldn’t make people feel too sweaty. With twisted openings, skin-flaunting shapes, and bias cuts, it’s clear that Do’s focus was on creating a collection that was both airy and comfortable. And with his loyal clientele in mind, it’s safe to say he succeeded.
