Issey Miyake’s “The Beauty of Paper” Collection Takes Over Paris Fashion Week

For its Spring/Summer 2025 runway show at Paris Fashion Week, Issey Miyake delved into the natural origins of paper. Aptly titled “The Beauty of Paper,” the experimental womenswear collection showcased the brand’s innovative use of traditional Japanese paper, washi, made from shrubs and bushes.

Attendees were given show notes on pieces of washi, setting the tone for the environmentally-conscious and thought-provoking show. Even the stools they sat on were made from compressed sheets of paper, a byproduct of Issey Miyake’s signature pleat-making technology.

While washi was once used as a material for clothing, creative director Satoshi Kondo and his team sought to pay homage to its history and the art of papermaking. “What is it about paper that makes us feel at ease?” the brand pondered. This question sparked the research and development of the collection, resulting in a range of experimental sartorial studies that incorporated the materials, techniques, and designs inspired by paper.

But beyond its practical use, the collection also delved into the human connection to paper, both in the present and in the past. The garments not only showcased the brand’s technical prowess, but also explored the emotional and cultural significance of paper.
