Dingyun Zhang: The Designer Bringing Childhood Nostalgia to the Runway
Step into the world of Shanghai-based designer Dingyun Zhang and you’ll be transported back to your childhood. Zhang’s latest collection, “SCAR:city,” is a fusion of his favorite childhood relics and otherworldly fashion, and it’s taking the fashion world by storm.
From G.I. Joe figures to McDonald’s Happy Meal toys, Dragon Ball Z characters to basketball trading cards, Zhang’s childhood favorites have become the inspiration for his unique designs. And now, he’s taking his creations to Paris, where he’s opening a showroom with Crocs to showcase his latest collection and a collaboration with the famous clog brand.
The presentation is nothing short of spectacular, with vivid changing lights and a faux pool of water representing the idea of success. Each of Zhang’s 16 designs is like a character in its own right, with mannequins striking poses inspired by Zhang’s childhood heroes. Some are flying above the pool like Spirited Away’s Chihiro and Haku, while others are in powerful fighting stances reminiscent of Dragon Ball Z’s Son Goku and NBA players.
But beyond the flashy presentation, Zhang’s collection carries a deeper message. “We all might be shooting at the same goal of success, but we’re going to get there differently,” he explains. “There’s no right or wrong, and there’s actually more similarities than differences among us. We all strive for a common goal, but navigating the scarcity on that path can pose challenges. This is a freeze-frame in that process, and I’m looking at all of the different personalities involved.”
Zhang’s characters may each have their own journey, but they are united by his signature extraterrestrial style. His classic Helmut Bag has evolved into headwear, with spiked and wormy hats and bug-eyed masks. A bomber jacket with ultra-voluminous sleeves, a light-green nylon coat with waterproofing, and a sherpa-collared puffer with a stiff grey scarf are just a few of the standout pieces in the collection.
But the hero piece, according to Zhang, is a functional jacket with velcro pockets and zip pouches across the entire body, designed to replace the need for a suitcase. “This piece is almost like an astronaut,” Zhang explains, demonstrating the sturdy pockets on the chest. “The reference was this zombie-astronaut hybrid figure I had as a kid with crazy long arms, which is why the length of the sleeves is particularly dramatic.”
And of course, no outfit is complete without the perfect footwear. Zhang’s collaboration with Crocs, called the Diffuser, is a contoured design in white that perfectly complements the rest of the collection. “I looked at aerodynamic sports cars, and I turned that into a shoe,” Zhang says of his design process.
With his unique blend of childhood nostalgia and otherworldly fashion, Zhang’s designs are truly out of this world. And with his latest collection and collaboration with Crocs, he’s proving that there’s no limit to his creativity and imagination.
