Olivier Rousteing: The Mastermind Behind Balmain’s Artistic Spring 2025 Collection
Balmain’s Spring 2025 collection was a true work of art, thanks to the creative genius of Olivier Rousteing. The prolific designer transformed the label’s architectural silhouettes into a canvas for grand expression, with intricate embroidery featuring realistic faces, nails, and lips. The collection also showcased rounded heads, reminiscent of Rousteing’s iconic sandy creation worn at this year’s Met Gala, which were incorporated into skirts and dresses.
Rousteing’s mastery was on full display throughout the collection, earning him a smile from none other than Cardi B in the front row. In his collection notes, Rousteing explained that he wanted every design to embody the modern Balmain DNA. To achieve this, he relied on the House’s skilled artisans, who continue to perfect the art of powerful shoulders, angular waists, and glittering embellishments in a contemporary way. His mood board was filled with inspiration from Monsieur Balmain’s “New French Style,” particularly his iconic “Jolie Madame” silhouette.
The stunning pieces in Rousteing’s collection required hundreds of thousands of beads, which were meticulously embroidered onto the structured silhouettes over several weeks. The end result paid homage to Pierre Balmain’s ornamentalism from the 1940s and ’50s, while also incorporating Rousteing’s signature blend of old and new. As he wrote, “The often-repeated combo of skinny leather pants and a DB jacket thrown over a simple tee or tank has been my go-to look for closing runways and meeting with the press for over a decade—and now it’s been adapted to form part of this season’s extensive daywear offerings.”
Rousteing not only wants you to appreciate his Balmain artistry, but he also wants you to embody it. At his House, art imitates life, both for the Balmain woman and for Rousteing himself. The show ended with a model brigade donning simple silk sheaths in a range of neutral hues, which Rousteing described as his favorite interpretation of the label’s icon: “the inspiring diversity of beauty that is constantly celebrated inside our inclusive Balmain Army.”
