Bottega Veneta’s Creative Director: A Master Craftsman with a Whimsical Touch
Matthieu Blazy, the creative director of Bottega Veneta, is not your average designer. With a unique eye and exceptional skills, he has reimagined the brand’s iconic woven leather goods into something even more extraordinary. But what sets him apart is not just his talent, but also his playful nature and childhood whimsy, which were on full display at the brand’s SS25 collection presentation during Milan Fashion Week.
“As a kid, everything is an adventure. There’s a sense of endless possibilities and we’re not bound by societal expectations,” Blazy shared. “We’re open to the idea of strange realities and wonder, where anything is possible and disillusionment doesn’t exist. This collection is all about the power of sincerity over strategy.”
Sincerity vs. Strategy: A New Take on Power Dressing
In the world of Bottega Veneta, sincerity reigns supreme over strategy. This is evident in the collection’s reimagining of “power dressing,” with intentionally misproportioned details like oversized leather collars and slouched shoulder seams. The collection also showcases a variety of materials, from leather evening dresses to jacquard patterns made of lightweight merino wool and disrupted striped shirting.
Animal motifs are also a prominent feature, adding a touch of whimsy to the collection. From bold prints to fish stoles and labels, the animal theme is seen throughout. But the most notable creatures are frogs and rabbits, which can be found jumping across jewelry, adorning fluffy mules, and inspiring the color palette. This playful nod to White Rabbit candies adds a touch of nostalgia to the collection.
Accessories: Joyous Meandering
No Bottega Veneta collection is complete without its iconic accessories, and this season is no exception. The brand’s signature Andiamo bag is featured alongside leather grocery bags that resemble plastic, and bricolage bags that exude a sense of playfulness. The collection’s show notes describe these accessories as “joyous meandering,” perfectly capturing the carefree spirit of the collection.
