Kid Cudi Transforms Garage into Otherworldly Fashion Pop-Up
Leave it to Kid Cudi to take a Grand Street garage and turn it into a galaxy far, far away. The rapper and fashion designer has set up shop in the heart of Soho with his Members of the Rage archival pop-up, a vibrant and high-vibrational world that offers a much-needed escape from the chaos of New York Fashion Week.
Featuring a showcase of archival pieces from past collections, including Fall/Winter 2024 and Spring/Summer 2024, the NYFW event is a must-see for fashion and music lovers alike. In an interview with Hypebeast, Cudi explains that his fashion inspirations come from a different pool than his music, drawing heavily from cartoons and anime.
From The Ren and Stimpy Show to Akira, Cudi’s upcoming collection is a reflection of his eclectic taste and unique vision. The pieces on display at the pop-up, including oversized jackets, sequined suits, fur coats, and funky cardigans, all feature Cudi’s signature graphics and mantras.
As guests like Anna Wintour, BNYX, Vashtie Kola, King Chip, and Tay Keith mingle and admire the collection, Cudi shares more about his inspirations and how his designs, like his music, are a direct reflection of his life. “Standing on dreams” is a mantra that Cudi lives by, as seen on a standout lime green varsity jacket.
When asked about his approach to fashion compared to music, Cudi explains that they are different but both heavily influenced by music. He draws inspiration from various sources, whether it’s a movie, a piece of art, or a fresh fit he sees on the streets of Tokyo. And while he’s always listening to music in the design studio, he also finds inspiration in cartoons and anime.
Speaking of which, Cudi’s love for cartoons is evident in the colorways of his pieces, with nods to his favorite shows from his childhood like Doug, Rugrats, and The Ren and Stimpy Show. He wanted his brand to stand out and be a breath of fresh air in the current landscape of “quiet luxury.”
So, what’s next for Members of the Rage? Cudi reveals that his upcoming collection, set to release in December or January, will feature even more anime-inspired designs. With his unique approach to fashion and music, Cudi continues to push boundaries and create a world of his own. And we can’t wait to see what he comes up with next.
