Sarah Burton Takes the Reigns as Givenchy’s New Creative Director

In a major fashion industry shakeup, British designer Sarah Burton has been officially named as the new creative director for Givenchy. The LVMH-owned brand has chosen Burton to lead the French house, making her the eighth designer to take on the prestigious role.

Prior to her appointment at Givenchy, Burton had a highly successful career at Alexander McQueen, where she spent her entire career. Now, she is set to become Givenchy’s second female couturier.

According to WWD, Burton will be introduced to the ateliers at Avenue George V this week and is expected to debut her first collection for Givenchy during Paris Fashion Week in March 2025.

Chairman of the Givenchy board, Sidney Toledano, shared a statement expressing his excitement for Burton’s arrival: “Sarah Burton is an exceptional creative talent whose work I have passionately followed for many years. I am very glad that she is joining Givenchy today. Her unique vision and approach to fashion will be invaluable to this iconic maison, known for its audacity and haute couture. I am convinced that her creative leadership will contribute to the future success and international standing of the maison.”

Burton also shared her own statement following the announcement, saying, “It is a great honor to be joining the beautiful house of Givenchy, it is a jewel. I am so excited to be able to write the next chapter in the story of this iconic house and to bring to Givenchy my own vision, sensibility and beliefs.”

Burton will be responsible for designing both women’s and men’s collections for the house, with her first collection being the women’s line debuting in March. She follows in the footsteps of the late Lee Alexander McQueen and has been hailed as one of the most prolific designers of her generation. She presented her final collection for Alexander McQueen in October 2023, before parting ways with the London-based Kering house.

With her powerful talent and unique vision, Burton is sure to continue her remarkable career at Givenchy. She takes over the role from Matthew M. Williams, and joins a long list of successful talents at the French house, including John Galliano and Riccardo Tisci.
