Off-White™ Takes Over Brooklyn Bridge Park for Debut NYFW Show
On a sunny Sunday afternoon, the iconic Brooklyn Bridge Park’s Pier 2 was transformed into a massive pick-up basketball court by none other than Virgil Abloh’s label, Off-White™. The brand’s debut New York Fashion Week show, titled “DUTY FREE,” showcased their Spring/Summer 2025 collection, which paid homage to both America and Africa through the lens of sportswear.
“DUTY FREE”: A Fusion of American and African Influences
Designer Ib Kamara explained the inspiration behind the collection, stating, “This collection was triggered by a trip to Ghana, the place where Virgil came from and the roots he cherished and constantly referred to in his work. I was born in Sierra Leone, and eventually grew up in London, but our experiences were similar.” The collection aimed to capture the dreamland of utopias made real and the endless opportunities that America represents in the collective imagination of Africans.
From Moodboard to Mode: Off-White™’s Urban Uniform
The menswear collection featured a modular metropolitan uniform, with utilitarian zippers, distorted denim, asymmetrical layers, and iconic embroidery. The brand’s signature crystal embellishments also made an appearance, adding a touch of luxury to the sportswear-inspired pieces. Standout pieces included sleeveless hoodies with zippered sections down the torso, varsity jackets coated in glistening depictions of the brand’s signage, and tops referencing athletic gear with “00” numbers on their backs. A highlight of the collection was a hearty denim coat featuring the collection’s name in big, bold text.
Architectural Silhouettes and Playful Motifs for Women
The women’s collection was equally impressive, with architecturally informed silhouettes that shaped the body with razor-tailored formals, seductive cuts, and hand-painted decorations. Dresses featured deep V-necklines, fishnet skirts were adorned with creme-colored sequins and white feathers, and zip-up jackets incorporated strong corsetry on the waist. Playful star-shaped motifs appeared throughout the line, adding a touch of whimsy to the collection.
Off-White™ Scores a Three-Pointer with Autobiographical Collection
For designer Ib Kamara, this was his first time showing in New York, and he aimed for a three-pointer with his “most autobiographical outing in every respect.” From the audience’s perspective, it was nothing but net. The Spring/Summer 2025 collection was a perfect fusion of American and African influences, showcasing the brand’s signature urban aesthetic with a touch of luxury and playfulness.
