Sven, as he prefers to be called, sees creating functional glass art as more than just a pursuit of aesthetics. To him, it’s a way to express his love for creativity, his reverence for the artistic process, and his unwavering dedication to personal growth. This is what initially drew him to the art of glass blowing, after witnessing it for the first time while he was a successful skateboarder in his youth. It was during this time that he met Eusheen Goines, who was just beginning to explore glass art, and was immediately captivated by the process. A decade later, Sven was still enamored with Goines’ work and decided to leave his life in San Francisco behind to move to Oregon and learn the techniques that would lay the foundation for his own creations.
“I’ve been blowing glass for about eight years now, but I’ve always had an interest in some form of art,” Sven explains. “At first, I started out making small spoon pipes like most of us do. But I remember the first time I felt like I truly knew what I was doing. It gave me this indescribable feeling, and from then on, I was completely hooked. I’ve been doing it ever since.” Over time, his work has evolved from simple pipes to intricate, multicolored glass pieces with intricate designs. His recent pieces include a stunning collection of water pipes and dab rigs, with a particular focus on replicating flowers. Sven fell in love with their graceful shapes and found that glass was the perfect medium to capture their beauty for eternity.
“When I first started, I was searching for direction and my own voice in my work,” Sven shares. “Early on, I met an artist named Ginger who inspired me with her flower designs. I was drawn to them, and she taught me how to incorporate that raw, natural beauty into my glasswork.” While the appearance of each piece is important to Sven, he also places great value on its functionality. He finds personal and spiritual fulfillment in the creative process, but also takes pride in knowing that his creations serve a purpose.
“It’s important to me that my work can actually be used,” Sven explains. “For me, the meaning comes from people using these items. Whether it’s for medicinal purposes, ceremonial use, or simply to relax, it’s an honor to know that something I’ve poured my heart and soul into is being used for life-changing or life-improving purposes.” Glass blowing has not only enriched the lives of those who use Sven’s art, but it has also had a profound impact on his own life. He credits the art form for allowing him to tap into his imagination and unleash his innovative side, which may have otherwise remained dormant. To him, there’s nothing more fulfilling than creating something with his heart and soul and seeing it bring joy and purpose to others.
