WTAPS x New Balance 998: A Subtle Spin on a Classic
WTAPS, the cult-favorite Japanese brand, has teamed up with New Balance to put their own spin on the iconic 998 model. Originally released in 1993, the 998 was the first New Balance shoe to feature the signature ABZORB sole. Now, with WTAPS’ tasteful edits, this classic silhouette is getting a fresh new look.
At first glance, the updates to the 998 may seem subtle, but that’s exactly what WTAPS is known for. The brand has chosen to stick with New Balance’s signature silver-grey color palette and overall design, but has added their own unique touches. Instead of the embossed leather details found on the original 998, WTAPS has opted for a more naturalistic snakeskin-like leather accent, seen on the “998” embroidered tongue. Co-branded word marks can also be found hidden inside the insoles, and a small “WTAPS VISUAL UPARMORED” can be seen along the side of the suede heel counters.
But don’t worry, the classic elements of the 998 are still present. The mesh toe box and collar remain, along with pigskin suede panels that add a touch of softness to the tech-forward style. And for a bit of eye-catching detail, patent silver accents can be found on the heel tab and the small N logo at the quarter panel.
The WTAPS x New Balance 998 will be available on November 8 through the WTAPS web store and select retailers. However, if you want to get your hands on a pair, you’ll have to enter an online lottery at participating stores (excluding WTAPS® (W_Lab) KYOTO). The lottery will take place from November 7 to November 8, so mark your calendars and don’t miss out on this highly anticipated collaboration.
