Balenciaga Unveils Demna’s Final Collection: A Tribute to Paris and the Evolution of Cristobal Balenciaga

Balenciaga, the iconic fashion house, has just debuted Demna’s last collection, marking the end of his 10-year tenure at the brand. The 54th Couture show, held in Paris, pays homage to the city and the ever-changing vision of Cristobal Balenciaga.

The campaign showcases Demna’s refined take on “La Bourgeoisie” and Hollywood glamour, as well as elevated everyday items. This includes the first-ever Balenciaga Couture sneaker, signaling a return to subtle elegance.

A Manifesto for the Future of Fashion

In a handwritten note to attendees, Demna wrote, “Fashion lives on the edge of tomorrow, driven not by what we know but the thrill of discovering what comes next.” This profound statement serves as a manifesto for the fashion industry as a whole, emphasizing the importance of evolution and embracing change.

“It is the expression of our need to evolve, to make sense of change before it arrives, to dress the future before it has a name,” he concluded.

A Tribute to Paris and Balenciaga’s Roots

The campaign also pays tribute to the city where Demna began his fashion journey. The editorial features recognizable faces from the Balenciaga community, including Kim Kardashian, Naomi Campbell, and Thai actor Krit Amnuaydechkorn, situated in various street corners and landmarks of Paris.

The collection itself draws inspiration from the dress codes of “La Bourgeoisie,” with Demna’s signature twist. Tulip lapels and exaggerated shoulders give a modern edge to traditional women’s tailoring, while bold prints, such as a textured houndstooth and sequined floral, add a touch of playfulness.

A Nod to Hollywood Glamour

The campaign also pays tribute to Hollywood glamour, with Kim Kardashian donning an off-white fur coat, lace-trimmed slip dress, and Lorraine Schwartz jewels. This look is a nod to Elizabeth Taylor, and sets the tone for a range of other glamorous ensembles.

As more men’s looks are introduced, we are reminded of Demna’s love for reimagining everyday items. An ultra-light silk bomber jacket, a briefcase turned “jewelry box” laptop case, and a trompe-l’œil corduroy jacket all showcase his ability to elevate the mundane to the extraordinary.

A Subdued and Elegant Finale

Demna’s final collection for Balenciaga is a departure from his usual ironic and tongue-in-cheek style. Instead, it is subdued, elegant, and graceful, focusing on the finest details rather than gimmicks.

In an official statement, Demna shared, “I have come as close as possible to being satisfied in this endless pursuit of impossible perfection, the defining ethos of Cristóbal Balenciaga.”

With this final collection, Demna has truly captured the essence of Balenciaga and its founder’s vision. It serves as a fitting end to his tenure at the iconic fashion house, paving the way for Pierpaolo Piccioli of Valentino to take the reins.
