If You Don’t Know About APPLIED ART FORMS, You’re Missing Out

If you’re not familiar with the term “applied art forms,” let us enlighten you. It refers to artistic disciplines that combine aesthetics and functionality, resulting in objects that are both visually appealing and useful. And one label that embodies this concept is none other than Guy Berryman’s APPLIED ART FORMS.

Garment Design and Construction: The Focus of APPLIED ART FORMS

When it comes to APPLIED ART FORMS, the main focus is on garment design and construction. The end result? A portfolio of collections that perfectly balance modern practicality with utilitarian style. And who better to lead this double-pronged approach than Coldplay bassist and creative director, Guy Berryman?

A Natural Talent for Design

You might be surprised to learn that Berryman has a natural talent for fashion design. When he launched APPLIED ART FORMS in 2020, he already had a personal archive of one-of-a-kind vintage finds that he had collected over years of touring with Coldplay. By delving into his wardrobe and experimenting with alternative cuts, Berryman creates collections that showcase how vintage garments can still be relevant and timeless in today’s fashion landscape.

Attention to Detail is Key

Running a fashion label is no easy feat, but Berryman pays close attention to every detail along the way. On a typical day, you can find him juggling hands-on tasks like conceptualizing collections and developing prototypes, as well as less glamorous tasks like admin and paperwork. But for Berryman, it’s all part of sustaining a fashion label in one of the most difficult industries.

From Vintage Collector to Creative Director

Berryman’s journey to becoming a fashion designer has been a long one, but it’s been worth it. He explains, “I had become an avid collector of garments for around 15 years, and that archive started speaking to me as a library of ideas to create new things.” And now, he’s running APPLIED ART FORMS in the heart of Amsterdam, a city that has greatly influenced the label’s designs.

Amsterdam: The Perfect Home for APPLIED ART FORMS

After living in the UK his whole life, Berryman made the move to Amsterdam and decided to base the APPLIED ART FORMS design studio there. He explains, “It’s a very creative city where opportunities and collaborations are waiting to happen.” And it’s clear to see how Amsterdam’s distinct style codes have influenced the label’s functional designs, incorporating a Dutch workwear edge.

From Paris Fashion Week to Highway Raves

As the APPLIED ART FORMS team prepares for their Paris Fashion Week showcase, Berryman takes a break to chat with Hypebeast about his design processes, partnering with Audio Obscura on the Highway Rave event, and the excitement of opening the label’s first flagship store in Amsterdam. With a unique blend of vintage inspiration and modern functionality, APPLIED ART FORMS is definitely a label to watch out for.
