Carhartt WIP Expands to Johor Bahru, Malaysia with Sleek New Store
Carhartt WIP, the iconic workwear brand, has officially opened its third location in Malaysia, this time in the bustling city of Johor Bahru. The 1,819-square-foot store, located on the ground floor of The Mall, Mid Valley Southkey, quietly made its debut and has quickly become a must-visit destination for design enthusiasts and streetwear aficionados alike.
Designed by the renowned Milan-based Andrea Caputo Studio & Salomée Faeh, the store boasts clean lines, concrete tones, and understated sophistication, perfectly blending the brand’s rugged workwear heritage with a contemporary industrial aesthetic. The space is both functional and visually striking, with a branded carpet by AC Studio and a handmade Carhartt logo designed by German artist Pietro Sanguinetti, adding subtle layers of identity.
To celebrate the opening, Carhartt WIP launched an exclusive capsule collection that sold out in record time. The collection, featuring the iconic Detroit Jacket and two short-sleeved tees inspired by the traditional Wau Johor kite, pays homage to the brand’s Malaysian setting in a thoughtful and localized way. Visitors were also treated to a site-specific lighting installation by local artist Jun Ong, titled “MERAK-07,” which reimagined the Wau through a futuristic lens, using light and material interplay to bridge tradition and innovation.
This latest expansion for Carhartt WIP is a testament to its ability to seamlessly blend local cultures with global subcultures. Since its inception in 1994, the brand has taken the workwear DNA of its American predecessor and transformed it into something entirely new, influenced by hip-hop, skateboarding, and techno, as well as functional design.
