Tom Sachs and Nike: The Resumption of a Controversial Partnership

After a nearly 18-month hiatus, Tom Sachs and Nike are set to resume their NikeCraft partnership. This comes after reports of the artist’s inappropriate and cruel behavior towards his studio staff caused a suspension of the collaboration. But now, Nike has released a statement saying that Sachs has demonstrated a commitment to fostering a culture of respect and inclusivity, and the partnership will continue.

The History of Tom Sachs and NikeCraft

Sachs and Nike first joined forces in 2012 and have since created several popular sneakers, including the original Mars Yard in 2012, the Mars Yard 2.0 in 2017, the Mars Yard Overshoe in 2018, and the General Purpose Shoe in 2022. However, in May 2023, the partnership was put on hold after an explosive article from Curbed exposed the strict rules and toxic environment in Sachs’ studio. This included the artist’s infamous “10 Bullets” and reports of him screaming, throwing objects, and making inappropriate comments.

The Return of NikeCraft

But now, with Sachs’ commitment to change and inclusivity, Nike has announced that the partnership will continue. The next chapter of NikeCraft will uphold their shared passion for team, product, and storytelling excellence. And according to Nike, more details will be revealed in 2025.

Controversy and Collaboration

This isn’t the first time Nike has resumed a partnership with a controversial figure. After the tragic events at Travis Scott’s Astroworld festival in 2021, the rapper and Nike took a six-month break before returning with new collaborations in 2022. And while the shoes were presented as “CACT.US CORP” collaborations and referenced Scott’s alter ego “Cactus Jack,” the rapper reportedly donated some of the proceeds to his Project HEAL initiative.

What’s Next for NikeCraft?

As of now, there is no official release date for the highly anticipated Mars Yard 3.0. But with Sachs’ statement that the shoe is in its final stages of development and being wear-tested, it’s safe to say that more information will be revealed soon. Stay tuned for updates on this controversial but highly anticipated collaboration between Tom Sachs and Nike.
