Update: The Whitaker Group Cleared of Federal Lawsuit Allegations
The sneaker world was rocked when news broke of a multi-million dollar federal lawsuit involving James Whitner, the founder and owner of The Whitaker Group. The umbrella company, which oversees popular sneaker boutiques Social Status, A Ma Maniere, and APB, was accused of illegally funneling product to Chinese resellers. But now, after years of legal battles, it seems the case may finally be coming to a close.
In a recent Instagram post, The Whitaker Group announced that they would not be prosecuted in the case. This comes after questions arose about several multi-million dollar deposits made under Whitner’s accounts between 2017 and 2022. The suit officially began in 2021 when federal police seized $1.2M USD of the group’s assets. However, according to documents obtained by WSNC Charlotte, the $1.2M was finally conceded to the federal government on September 20th, 2024.
The controversy surrounding the case also raised concerns about the future of The Whitaker Group’s relationships with collaborators like Nike, whose products were involved in the lawsuit. However, Whitner has maintained a consistent relationship with Jordan throughout the case. In fact, details about the highly anticipated A Ma Maniére Air Jordan 4 “W.Y.W.S.” were just shared in early September, following a string of successful Jordan collaborations earlier in the year.
In response to the case, The Whitaker Group released a statement addressing the allegations. They stated that the recent action by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Western District of North Carolina (USAO) was a result of their cooperation and good-faith negotiations. The statement also emphasized that the allegations were unfounded and unrelated to their business or community. The company’s inventory management team operates transparently and in compliance with industry standards and tax obligations.
The Whitaker Group has been a staple in the global business community for over 20 years, with over 20 locations and 250 employees across the country. Their work has been dedicated to amplifying the voices of people of color and building a legacy of excellence. Despite the challenges they have faced, the company remains grateful for the support of their vendor partners throughout the process. They firmly stand by their business practices and disagree with the USAO’s allegations. The Whitaker Group is caught in the middle of a financial and regulatory war between the U.S. and China, but they maintain that they have no part in it.
