Chanel Sales Decline for the First Time Since 2020, Company Plans Rebrand Under New Artistic Director

Chanel, the iconic French luxury house, has experienced a 4.3% decrease in sales for the first time since 2020. This decline in sales has prompted the company to re-evaluate its pricing strategy and focus on revamping its image under the leadership of new artistic director Matthieu Blazy.

According to reports from BOF, CEO Leena Nair and CFO Philippe Blondiaux have acknowledged the challenges in the luxury market and are taking steps to address them. Despite the decline in sales, Chanel remains in a “very healthy level” and is still planning to open 48 new boutiques this year.

Blondiaux stated that the decline in sales is largely due to a lag in the leather goods sector, which is a significant source of revenue for the company. While other sectors like watches and fine jewelry have seen growth, Chanel’s reliance on leather goods has been a factor in the decline.

In recent years, Chanel has faced criticism for its sharp price increases, particularly on its classic handbags. However, the company has agreed to slow down on these price hikes and maintain prices in line with global inflation.

Nair emphasized that despite the challenges, Chanel remains committed to its long-term investments and is using this moment to focus on what makes the brand unique. With the guidance of Blazy, the company is gearing up for a rebrand that will solidify its position as a leader in the luxury market.

As the company celebrates its 100th anniversary, it is clear that Chanel is determined to weather the storm and continue to thrive in the ever-changing world of luxury fashion.
