To achieve the ultimate potency from your cannabis plant when creating edibles, it is crucial to always decarboxylate, or decarb, your material before infusing it with another substance like oil or butter. Decarbing involves heating up the plant matter to activate the active compounds in cannabis, specifically THC and CBD. This process is known as decarboxylation because it breaks off the natural carboxyl chain of molecules attached to raw THC, allowing it to produce the euphoric effects. This is why consuming raw cannabis plants will not result in any psychoactive effects.
Ingredients:
– Any amount of cannabis, buds or trim.
Directions:
Step 1: Preheat your oven to 240º F.
Step 2: Break apart any large buds with your hands.
Step 3: Spread the cannabis on a baking sheet with sides.
Step 4: Place in the oven.
Step 5: After 45 minutes, remove the cannabis from the oven. It should now be lightly browned and decarboxylated.
Chef’s Note: Decarbing at a low temperature helps preserve the maximum amount of terpenes, which are the oils in marijuana that give it its unique flavor profiles and also have some health benefits.
