The mere mention of the name Cousteau evokes images of thrilling adventures, groundbreaking ocean research, and unwavering conservation efforts. For three generations, the Cousteau family has dedicated their lives to these pursuits, starting with the legendary Jacques Cousteau and his pioneering work in scuba diving and underwater exploration. It is no surprise that Philippe Cousteau Jr., Jacques’ grandson, chose to follow in the footsteps of his father and grandfather. In a time when the health of our oceans hangs in the balance, Philippe, now 43, remains committed to solving global social and environmental issues. He has spent decades leading ocean activism efforts, from speaking at the United Nations to showcasing the wonders of the underwater world on television screens around the world.
It was during one of these media events that Philippe met his future wife, Ashlan Gorse, a seasoned journalist and on-air host who was working as a correspondent for E! News at the time. Ashlan was immediately struck by Philippe’s passion for conservation and it inspired her to consider a career change. “I remember thinking, ‘Why am I reporting on the Kardashians when there are people like him doing such important work?'” she recalls with a laugh. The two quickly bonded, both personally and professionally, and were married in 2013. Together, they continue to inspire and motivate each other to make a positive impact on the planet for future generations.
As their careers in conservation research, public speaking, and television production progressed, Philippe and Ashlan realized that there was one significant platform where their efforts were lacking. “We recognized the power that wellness brands have, and the responsibility they have to make the world a better place,” Ashlan explains. And as a seasoned oceanographer, Philippe knows that few ingredients promote both physical and ecological wellness better than seaweed and algae. “Seaweed is a superfood, one of the most nutrient-dense foods on the planet,” he explains. “It has anti-inflammatory properties and can help with anxiety. Algae is rich in Omega-3s, which are great for mood stabilization, brain and heart health, and even skin health. Even if you don’t care about the environmental benefits, it’s just really good for you.”
Of course, the eco-friendly and restorative properties of seaweed and algae are important to Philippe and Ashlan. In a world where half of the coral reefs are dying and plastic pollution is a major threat to marine life, they are determined to make a positive impact. “Seaweed is like the seaweed of the land,” Philippe says. “It helps sequester carbon when it’s grown sustainably and improves soil health. These ingredients are meant for each other.”
In 2019, Philippe and Ashlan decided to combine their passion for conservation and wellness by launching their own line of seaweed and algae-based products. Their brand, High Tide, offers a range of eco-friendly and sustainable skincare and wellness products that harness the power of these oceanic ingredients. “We wanted to create a brand that not only promotes personal wellness, but also supports the health of our planet,” Ashlan explains.
Through their brand and their continued efforts in ocean conservation, Philippe and Ashlan are making a positive impact on the world. They are a shining example of how passion, dedication, and a love for the ocean can lead to meaningful change.
