Clothing Hanger: The Secret Code of MM6
Shoulder pads, sheer dress overlays, and oversized blazers – these are the key elements of MM6’s signature style. The brand made a triumphant return to Pitti Uomo earlier this year as the guest designer, showcasing their first-ever stand-alone menswear runway show. The collection paid homage to Martin Margiela’s iconic 2006 white-out show and reimagined the deconstructed capsule uniform for MM6’s ready-to-wear man. And now, for their FW25 womenswear collection, they have expanded on these ideas and explored the possibilities of subversive simplicity.
The models confidently strutted down the catwalk, making direct eye contact with guests through their screen-like blacked-out sunglasses – a move that was first introduced in the menswear show. While the menswear collection was dominated by a black and white palette, the womenswear collection offered a softer range. Earth tones such as black, charcoal, brown, and beige were broken up twice by a surprise pop of red and blue.
The collection’s uniform aesthetic was emphasized through clever design details that were only noticeable to the most observant eye. Trench coats were cut at the waist, and striped polos were given a sharp edge with right-angle shoulders using removable pads. Tonal mesh was also used in multiple ways – as an overlay for crinkled knit sets and blouses, and as stand-alone sheer tops paired with pants featuring exaggerated, untrimmed seams.
While Glenn Martens’ debut as the creative director of Maison Margiela has yet to be officially announced, the designer was spotted in attendance at the MM6 show, fresh off the success of his mega Diesel collection. Martens, known for his signature deconstruction of textiles, particularly denim, was recently confirmed as the creative director of Maison Margiela. The house’s popularity has been on the rise since Martin Margiela’s departure, with the Artisanal SS24 collection causing a stir in the industry. With Martens’ impressive portfolio, including his time at Diesel and his cult-favorite collaboration with Jean Paul Gaultier Couture, fashion enthusiasts are eagerly anticipating his debut at Maison Margiela.
