Glenn Martens: The Master of Dichotomies

Glenn Martens is not your average designer. He is a master of contrasts, creating a world where deconstruction meets community, and traditional meets avant-garde. His latest collection for Diesel’s Fall/Winter 2025 exemplifies his unique sartorial language, showcasing a mix of laminated denim, shredded tweed, and houndstooth sets that are both familiar and unexpected.

But Martens’ designs are not just for the fashion elite. He breaks down barriers and invites design students and local artists to participate in the sacred ritual of the runway. His pieces challenge the status quo, with clown-like smiles and fringed raw edges bringing a playful twist to traditional materials.

One standout piece from the collection is a towering figure on the runway, conceptualized by Studio Dennis Vanderbroeck. This inflatable doll, previously seen in Diesel’s Spring/Summer 2023 show, has been repurposed with a graphic twist. Martens explains that he enlisted the help of 7,800 graffiti artists from around the world to transform the sculpture into a community-driven installation.

Martens’ boundary-breaking designs extend beyond just his collections. He has also shattered the industry’s secrecy by live streaming the atelier for Diesel’s FW24 collection and inviting thousands of members of the public, prioritizing design students, to his shows. This emphasis on community has become a signature element of Martens’ work, and fans eagerly anticipate his upcoming debut at Maison Margiela.
