Indonesian Textile Imprint SMM Teams Up with Artist Eko Nugroho for Fashion Exhibition “Republik Sebelah Mata”

Get ready to experience a fashion exhibition like no other. Sejauh Mata Memandang (SMM), a leading Indonesian textile brand, has joined forces with contemporary artist Eko Nugroho to bring you “Republik Sebelah Mata.” This investigative exhibition is a follow-up to their successful DEWI Fashion Knights runway collaboration at Jakarta Fashion Week.

Located at The Space in Plaza Indonesia, the exhibition showcases 25 stunning fashion designs that were previously featured in SMM’s runway show. The exhibition is creatively directed by Felix Tjahyadi, co-designer of the collection. As you enter, you’ll be greeted by a unique patterned carpet made from organic materials, including palm kernel shells. And don’t forget to check out the pop-up store, where you can purchase SMM products and DGTMB merchandise designed by Nugroho.

The main exhibition features mannequins dressed in the collaborative line, set against a backdrop of Nugroho’s curated paintings. One room, called “Ruang Malam,” is dedicated to three all-black outfits that were created in response to themes of injustice, sorrow, disappointment, and resistance.

According to Chitra Subyakto, founder and creative director of Sejauh Mata Memandang, “After the fashion show at DFK 2024, Eko, Felix, and I discussed how a wider audience could enjoy this collection. We wanted to create a space where people could not only see the designs but also understand the stories behind each piece, the creative process, and the artisans and partners who contributed to it.”

Eko Nugroho also shared his thoughts on the collaboration, saying, “Through this collaboration, I want to invite more people to see art in various forms. Fashion is a medium that is close to our daily lives, and I want to show that art can live on our bodies.”

Don’t miss your chance to see this unique exhibition for yourself. Check out the featured looks in the gallery above, and head to The Space in Plaza Indonesia before the end of April to experience “Republik Sebelah Mata” for yourself.
