Taylor Thompson’s Oakland-Bred 5000 Pays Homage to Bay Area Slang in Debut NYFW Runway
Oakland native Taylor Thompson’s fashion label, 5000, is known for its bold Bay Area pride. Last season, the brand paid tribute to San Francisco’s iconic Mabuhay Gardens punk venue at its New York Fashion Week debut. And now, for its first-ever NYFW runway, the 2024 CFDA Fashion Fund finalist is once again honoring his hometown with a collection that explores the meaning and impact of a unique Northern California slang term.
Titled “Bootsy,” 5000’s Fall/Winter 2025 collection is centered around the Bay Area term. Also spelled “Bootsee,” the word is often used to describe something or someone uncool or awkward, popularized by the E-40 song of the same name. It can also be a nod to funk legend Bootsy Collins, representing boldness and eccentricity. At its core, “bootsy” celebrates individuality and authenticity, and Thompson uses this concept to create a range that goes beyond just fashion and delves into cultural significance and social commentary.
The runway show, held at the indoor rooftop of the Lower East Side’s Nine Orchard Hotel, showcased 29 looks set to a fitting Bay Area soundtrack. Models strutted down a white runway surrounded by the city skyline, while guests enjoyed an intimate viewing experience. The collection features a strong focus on suiting, with classic double-lapelled suits in grey, black, and pinstriped patterns. But in true “bootsy” fashion, these traditional pieces are given a twist with double pockets on one side of the jacket and ribbon ties. Thompson also experiments with innovative layering and mixing of textures, pushing the boundaries of contemporary menswear.
The show’s notes describe “bootsy” as a term that challenges norms and embraces rebellion, much like the concept of “camp.” And Thompson’s collection certainly lives up to this idea, with models sporting Oxford shirts with curved buttoning down the middle and pleated capes that transform into trains attached to jackets. The overall message is to show that even something considered uncool or rough can be chic, tender, and expressive.
