Stadium Goods Shuts Down Iconic NYC Store After Almost a Decade
After nearly ten years of dominating the sneaker game, Stadium Goods is bidding farewell to its New York City location. The store, located on 47 Howard Street in the trendy SoHo neighborhood, has been a go-to spot for rare and highly sought-after sneakers.
In an exclusive interview with Footwear News, the company’s senior vice president and general manager revealed the reason behind the closure: “The lease was up for renewal and we made the decision not to continue. Our focus is on digital channels, so that’s where we’re investing to drive growth. However, we have plans to revamp our market center at 412 Broadway to continue accepting new products from sellers and provide an elevated retail experience in the same space.”
The Lower Manhattan store, founded by John McPheters and Jed Stiller, first opened its doors on October 16, 2015. Seven years later, in February 2022, it underwent a major renovation that included a new entrance at 305 Canal St. and an expansion to 2,860 square feet of space, giving shoppers even more room to browse and buy.
In 2018, Stadium Goods was acquired by Farfetch Limited for a whopping $250 million USD. And just last year, the e-commerce luxury platform was purchased by South Korean company Coupang for a staggering $500 million USD. As the company shifts its focus to online retail, it remains to be seen how it will continue to grow. But one thing is for sure: the closure of their iconic SoHo store marks the end of an era for Stadium Goods.
